Steve Turner, well known in local football circles from the 1950s to 2000s, passed away last week following a long battle with illness He was 82.

Turner started his playing career in the 1950s with Barking, where he made over 400 appearances before signing for Hornchurch in the early 1960s.

After playing more than 120 games for the Urchins, he played for various local teams until starting his vets career with Upminster in the 1980s.

There, he played for almost two decades, retiring well into his 50s, and also held several positions in local football, including the chairman’s post of Upminster FC and the Veterans Football Alliance for over a decade until ill health.

Approached by Barking club secretary John Faherty at an awards event in 2010, Sir Trevor Brooking mentioned attending games at Vicarage Field – and being especially impressed by Turner.

His funeral will be held at South Essex Crematorium, Corbets Tey Road, Upminster, RM14 2UY on Thursday October 18 at midday.
