Ryman North: Romford 1 Soham Town 2
Romford saw their winless streak in Ryman North extend to seven matches with a third straight loss at Ship Lane.
Boro have taken just three points from a possible 21 since their derby win at Hornchurch in late October and return to action after Christmas with a clash against high-flying landlords Thurrock.
Paul Martin’s men started well, moving the ball about confidently, but fell behind on 12 minutes when Jordan Gent scores from a corner.
Both teams were reduced to 10 men just past the half-hour mark when Jamie Dicks was fouled and a melee broke out, which led to Soham’s Salim Relizani and Boro’s George Woodward receiving their marching orders.
Soham, who included former Manchester United winger Luke Chadwick in their line-up, doubled their advantage nine minutes into the second half through Ross Paterson, although there was a suggestion of a foul on Boro captain Matt Frew in the build-up to the goal.
That left the hosts with a mountain to climb and and Soham could have had more, but for some good saves from Michael Gooch and some poor finishing in the box.
Martin sent Chinedu McKenzie and Akwasi Marfo on to boost his attacking options and the move paid off as Boro halved the deficit with 20 minutes remaining.
Marfo claimed his second goal of the season when his shot beat an unsighted Enol Ordonez in the visiting goal, but despite enjoying the majority of possession, Boro largely failed to seriously test the keeper in the time left as Soham got men behind the ball and held on for the points.
And defeat leaves Boro in 18th place, just five points above the relegation zone heading into Christmas.
Romford: Gooch, Boswell (Taylor 82), Woodward, Olafuwmisle, Frew, Tubey (Marfo 66), Dicks, Giddings, Burgess, Reynolds, Scott (McKenzie 61). Unused sub: Greg Akpele.
