Chinedu McKenzie’s late goal earned Romford the points from their Ryman North derby with Barkingside to get the new year off to a good start at Ship Lane.

But defeat for the visitors made it 12 games without a win and kept them in the relegation zone, two points adrift of safety behind Heybridge.

Boro had been beaten 3-1 by landlords Thurrock in their final outing of 2015 and made three changes to their starting line-up as Jamie Dicks, Chris Barry and Lee Weemes came in for George Woodward, Luke Stanley and Nick Reynolds.

Barkingside arrived with only two points from their last 10 league matches, meanwhile, and boss Gursel Gulfer also made three changes from their 1-0 home loss to Haringey Borough, with Jonathan Nzengo, Andy Greenslade and Junior Mustapha coming in for George Lutaaya, Kofi Halliday and Richard Whyte.

Dicks was shown a yellow card midway through the first half as the two sides battled to gain the upper hand.

And the deadlock was broken with 19 minutes remaining when Luke With put Barkingside in front.

Romford’s assistant manager Mark Lord – deputising for the absent Paul Martin – sent Reynolds on for Weemes almost immediately, before replacing Barry with Joe Scott soon after.

And the second substitution paid instant dividends for the home side as Scott got Boro back on level terms with his first goal of the season.

It remained all square until two minutes from time when McKenzie pounced to claim his eighth goal for Boro and 11th of the season to send the home fans in a crowd of 44 home the happier.

Victory lifted Romford above Witham and into 17th place, eight points clear of the bottom three ahead of next weekend’s trip to Brightlingsea Regent.

Barkingside now face a two-week wait until their next outing, when they make the long trip to Wroxham on January 16.
