Hornchurch, Ilford, Barkingside and Redbridge were all in pre-season action on Saturday

Local clubs got back into the swing of things on Saturday as several stepped up their plans for the new campaign by playing pre-season friendlies.

Ryman North outfit Hornchurch made the short trip to Robert Clack Leisure Centre to face local rivals Ilford, of the Essex Senior League.

Urchins’ George Purcell wasted no time in getting himself on the scoresheet as he registered his first strike of the season after two minutes.

He chipped the Foxes goalkeeper and although their was some debate about whether it should have been a goal or not, it was awarded.

Five minutes before the break and Purcell doubled his tally by breaking clear and lashing home to make it 2-0 to Hornchurch at half time.

Jimmy McFarlane had 10 trialists involved and in the 82nd minute one of them made a lasting impression by adding a third.

Paulius Ditkevicius was fouled on the edge of the area, but picked himself up before smashing a free kick past the Ilford goalkeeper.

Vlad Sighiartau was another trialist for Urchins, after impressing for Essex Senior League side Newham last season, and he also got on the scoresheet three minutes before full time.

He finished off a good team move by slotting home to make the final score 4-0 to Hornchurch at Robert Clack Leisure Centre.

Foxes boss Allan Fenn tweeted: “A big thank you to Hornchurch who provided excellent opposition for my lads. Work in progress, but going well.”

Elsehwere, Barkingside played their first match under new manager Gursel Gulfer, although it was made up of trialists.

They faced Brimsdown Rovers at the Met Police Grounds in Chigwell and Side triumphed 3-1 to give Gulfer a winning start.

Redbridge started their pre-season campaign with a fixture at Essex Olympian outfit Harold Wood and Dave Ross and Ricky Eaton’s team won 3-2.

Joe Gent, James Dobson and Lewis Francis were on target for the Motormen, of the Ryman North.

Barkingside are back in action tomorrow (Tuesday) as they visit Essex Senior League side Sporting Bengal United, managed by former Dagenham & Redbridge captain Anwar Uddin, at the Mile End Stadium.

Ilford also play another friendly. They were set to play Witham Town, but that has been cancelled and replaced by Enfield Town. That match will take place at The Robert Clack Leisure Centre.
