Ryman Premier: AFC Hornchurch 3 Enfield Town 0

A double from George Purcell and another from strike partner Stefan Payne earned Hornchurch all three points against Enfield Town in the Ryman Premier at Bridge Avenue.

The visitors enjoyed lots of possession, but Urchins looked threatening every time they attacked and were clinical in addition to defending excellently throughout.

It was a quiet start from both teams though as they eyed each other up in the early exchanges, but Hornchurch nearly fell behind with 16 minutes played when Joe Stevens hit the post.

Stevens was found in space on the left but his attempted cross nearly caught everyone out as it smashed off the post, fortunately for the hosts.

The visitors enjoyed a prolonged spell of possession and forced Urchins captain Elliot Styles into a last-ditch clearance inside his own box following Tyler Campbell’s scuffed shot, while Spanish stopper Inigo Echepare was called into action parrying away two dangerous crosses in the space of a minute.

Payne had suffered a frustrating night up until the 32nd minute but he then had the goal at his mercy and found the net to give Hornchurch the lead.

Frankie Curley started the move and it was his drive inside from the touchline that injected pace into the attack, he passed to Purcell who found striker partner Payne and the 16-league goal man slide home the opener.

A former Urchin nearly came back to haunt them as Bertie Brayley turned Styles inside the box but fired wide as Hornchurch went into the break ahead.

And only five minutes into the second half Urchins doubled their lead through Purcell.

It was a trademark finish from the forward too, as a set piece was fired in with Purcell positioning himself on the edge. It was headed out, he worked a yard of space and smashed home the second.

Purcell could have had another when Joey May found him with a wonderful cross but Enfield keeper James Chalk made a good save.

Enfield pushed to reduce the deficit and an outstanding defensive header by Rickie Hayles prevented them doing so but Urchins always appeared comfortable.

Purcell then added some gloss to the scoreline two minutes from time with his second of the game and 17th in the league this season.

Payne raced past his marker, cut the ball back for substitute Carl Rook who dummied with a lovely nutmeg for Purcell to slide in.

It capped a fantastic night for Hornchurch as they put the previous three league defeats in a row behind them with this clinical display.

Hornchurch: Echepare, Coyne, Bentley, Styles, Hayles, Curley, Bremner (Eyong 73), May, Payne, Purcell, Lechmere (Rook 83).
