Hornchurch grabbed their first pre-season win of the 2014/15 season on Saturday as they won 2-1 against Ryman One South side Whitstable Town.

Two goals from new signing Tobi Joseph put Urchins in control and despite conceding midway through the second period they held out for a hard fought victory.

Jimmy McFarlane’s team went ahead after 27th minute of this testing pre-season encounter when two recent additions linked up.

Tom Davis won the ball in midfield and beared down on goal only to see his shot saved, but Joseph was first to react and tapped in from close range.

Though Whitstable pushed to equalise before the break, Joseph again found himself in the right place at the right time with 40 minutes gone.

Chris Bourne’s corner was flicked on and Joseph was on hand to score his second of the match and give Hornchurch a 2-0 lead at half time.

Several substitutions were made in the second half and Whitstable pulled one back when Adam Woollcott’s cross cum shot eluded Urchins keeper Callum Chafer.

Chafer would go on to make two excellent late saves for McFarlane’s side though and Hornchurch almost added a third through Jamie Hursit but it finished 2-1 in favour to the visitors.

Hornchurch: Chafer, Homans (Hursit 71), Bourne (Whitelock 64), Beckles, Bentley (Dadson 55), Curley (Starkey 61), Luke, Davis (May 55), Tuohy (Marshall-Katung 61), Joseph (Izuchukwu 78), Green (Styles 46).

Romford were victorious 4-1 on Saturday against Eastern Counties League Division One Saffron Walden Town at Ship Lane.

Paul Martin’s team played their first pre-season game of the season at Ship Lane and put on an impressive show with Tom Richardson, Matt Toms, Scott Truman and Reece Tranter all finding the net.

Richardson got the ball rolling after 24 minutes when he lobbed Saffron Walden’s keeper for the opener but the visitors levelled six minutes later.

Boro went back ahead shortly before half time though through Toms, as he headed into the net following Paul Preston’s cross.

And Romford scored their third in the 71st minute through Truman after Tranter and James Ishmail worked the ball well from a corner before Tranter got himself on the scoresheet.

Four minutes before full time Tranter sealed his fine solo run with a low shot into the net to conclude the scoring and continue Boro’s positive start to pre-season.
