Goals either side of half time helped Hornchurch upset Ryman North leaders Cray at Bromley last night.

Dave Collis struck from close range three minutes before the interval to put Urchins ahead, with Tobi Joseph doubling their lead nine minutes after the restart.

And victory will have given Jimmy McFarlane’s men a massive boost ahead of their FA Cup third qualifying round tie at Worthing on Saturday, after the Sussex club beat St Neots Town in a friendly.

Cray’s Hayes Lane pitch passed an afternoon inspection and the visitors made a fine start, with George Purcell teeing up strike partner David Knight in the second minute to fire a shot against the crossbar.

Joseph was denied by a good save from Nick Blue four minutes later and the Cray keeper also thwarted Knight midway through the first half.

The home side got their first sight of goal on 25 minutes when Mike Frieter tested Sam Mott.

And Lee Dawson put a right-wing cross wide of the target on the half-hour mark as Wanderers attacked again.

The deadlock was broken on 42 minutes, though, when Joey May’s free kick was headed back across goal for Collis to apply the finishing touch at point-blank range.

And Urchins went close to a second on the stroke of half time when Junior Luke’s header was tipped over by Blue.

The Cray custodian kept out a Joseph header three minutes into the second half but could not prevent the same player doubling Hornchurch’s lead with a header on 54 minutes.

Cray went close to a reply from a corner on 63 minutes, but May cleared off the line.

Purcell then fired wide from Jed Chouman’s pass before Nathan Cooper was shown a yellow card.

McFarlane sent Harry Baker on for May with 15 minutes remaining and the substitute was just off-target after a spell of Hornchurch pressure.

Chouman then rattled the crossbar three minutes from time, before Cooper cleared a late Cray attempt as Urchins banked three welcome points to move up to second place in the table, three points behind Cray with a game in hand.

Hornchurch: Mott, Chouman, Luke, Styles, Cooper, Witherspoon, May (Baker 75), Collis, Knight, Purcell (Poku 90), Joseph. Unused subs: Smith, Coyne, Thompson.
