Urchins came off second best against a young Hammers XI at sunny Bridge Avenue.

The home side, beaten 2-1 at home by Hemel Hempstead on Thursday evening, took a fifth-minute lead when Chris Bourne’s effort beat Raphael Spiegel.

But West Ham hit back to level on 11 minutes when a George Moncur corner was headed home by Dylan Tombides.

Hornchurch’s Michael Spencer replaced the injured Phil Starkey soon after and the visitors went close to taking the lead midway through the first half when Danny Whitehead’s 20-yard strike came off the crossbar.

Urchins regained the initiative instead on 31 minutes when a long ball was flicked on by Ade Yusuff and George Purcell calmly lobbed Spiegel to maintain his fine scoring form in pre-season.

And Joey May went close to making it 3-1, sweeping wide from Bourne’s cross, before Hammers counter-attacked and Moncur curled his effort just past the post.

Hammers got back on terms just before the interval, though, when their earlier goalscorer Tombides turned provider, crossing for Blair Turgott to tuck the ball past Inigo Echepare.

And the Premier League’s young squad began the second half the better, before taking the lead just before the hour mark when Moncur converted from the penalty spot.

Both sides made changes after that and Urchins substitute Tambeson Eyong had a header well saved, before stabbing another effort over following a knockdown from fellow replacement Carl Rook.

Hammers made sure of victory 10 minutes from time when Moncur grabbed his second goal of the game.

But there were further chances late on, as Junior Lawrence fired over for Hornchurch and Frazer Shaw forced a good save from Echepare.

Urchins complete their pre-season campaign with a trip to Aveley on Monday, before opening the new Ryman Premier Division season with a home match against Lewes on August 10.

Hornchurch: Echepare, Coyne, Griffiths, Styles (Gumbs 85), Hayles (Smith 82), May (Daley 75), Starkey (Spencer 16), Glover (Love 81), Yusuff (Rook 62), Purcell (Lawrence 81), Bourne (Eyong 70).

West Ham: Spiegel, Driver, Shaw, Whitehead, Chambers, Spence, Turgott, Moncur, Maguire (McCallum 67), Lletget, Tombides.
