Eddie Hart’s fifth goal of the season proved enough for Romford to bank three welcome points at Bayliss Avenue last night.

Boro had begun 2015 with a 3-0 defeat at Great Wakering on New Year’s Day, which left them just outside the relegation zone, and saw their home clash with Maldon washed out at Ship Lane on Saturday.

But they bounced back in style to give boss Paul Martin a much-needed boost.

The visitors welcomed club appearance record holder Paul Clayton back into their starting line-up, following his loan spell with Essex Senior League side Ilford and the recent departures of Matt Toms to Cheshunt and Tom Richardson to Brentwood.

Jamie Dicks and James Ishmail were both out injured, which meant there were also returns for Rob Norris, Tyler Hayes, captain Jack Barry, Danny Jones and Callum Ibe as Martin shuffled his pack.

Barry picked up a slight injury during the warm-up, though, and was replaced in the starting XI by Nathan Cooper and there was nothing between the two sides in the first half, which ended goalless.

Boro made the breakthrough on 55 minutes as Hart struck and the visitors had a let-off soon after when Thamesmead missed a penalty, firing it against the crossbar.

The home side ended the game with only nine men after Derek Duncan and substitute Lee Coburn saw red in the closing minutes.

Boro moved up two places to 18th as a result and will be gunning for revenge when they welcome Brightlingsea Regent to Ship Lane this weekend, having lost their previous meetings in the league and Essex Senior Cup this season.

Romford: Omand, Norris, Hayes, Cooper, Clayton, Cocklin, Kemp (Cosson 85), Seymour, Hart, Jones, Ibe. Unused subs: Reynolds, Akinshade.
