Romford booked their place in the next round of the county cup with a comfortable win at Capershotts last night.

Boro travelled on the back of a 3-1 league defeat at Tilbury on Saturday and manager Paul Martin rang the changes to his side.

With regular goalkeeper Michael Gooch unavailable, striker Nick Reynolds took the gloves and maintained a clean sheet behind a defence that included new recruit Moshi Olafunisle, who has been signed from Heybridge Swifts.

Abbey, beaten in the league at Ship Lane last month, also made several changes with one eye on their FA Trophy tie against Grays at the weekend and Boro took the lead with only four minutes played.

Chinedu McKenzie showed plenty of determination on the right flank to send over a low cross, which Lee Weemes converted, but the visitors had Reynolds to thank for two decent saves as Abbey looked to respond.

Olafunisle impressed on his debut and Boro doubled their advantage just before the half-hour mark when George Woodward set off on a strong run and pulled the ball back from the byline for Chris Taylor to score.

The visitors could have gone further ahead before the break, after George Tubey showed some fantastic footwork, but the chance went begging.

Tubey made amends eight minutes after the restart, though, with a well-placed shot that caught the Abbey keeper napping.

Reynolds was rarely troubled at the other end during the second half as Boro, with Martin using all three of his permitted substitutions, eased into the last 16.

The draw for the next round is due to be made on BBC Radio Essex today (Wednesday) at 5.30pm.

Romford: Reynolds, Boswell, Woodward, Olafunisle, Potter, Tubey (Cossington), Taylor, Culham (Marfo), Weemes, McKenzie, Burgess (Stanley). Unused sub: Frew.
