Essex Senior Cup, third round: Colchester United 0 Romford 2

Romford produced a shock in the Essex Senior Cup to knock out Sky Bet League Two side Colchester United, winning 2-0 in the third round.

Boro went close to taking the lead against a young U’s side in just the third minute, with Chris Taylor firing narrowly over the bar.

Visiting stopper Rhys Hughes was kept busy in the opening 45 minutes, but kept the hosts at bay as the sides went into the break level.

Paul Martin’s men took the lead early in the second half, with Khadean Campbell putting the Bostik North club ahead.

The Rookery Hill club suffered a blow midway through the half when Jamie Marsh went off injured, before Danny Jones doubled the away team’s advantage.

Romford suffered a blow with seven minutes remaining when Nathan Okoye was dismissed after collecting a second yellow card, but the visitors held on to win.

Boro will hope to use their cup success as a boost ahead of making the trip to Bowers & Pitsea in the league on Saturday.
