Essex under-18s made the perfect start to their East Anglian Counties Championship campaign as goals late in each half from Tarryn Allarakhia and Shenfield School’s Tom Howe sealed a 2-0 win over Cambridgeshire at Stanway Rovers last night.

Having not won this section of the East Anglian Counties since 2004, the win sets Essex up nicely for the remainder of the campaign, as well as proving to be a more than useful warm-up for their National FA County Youth Cup tie with Somerset on October 10.

The hosts started brightly in North Essex, but the first opportunity of the evening took 14 minutes to arrive as Howe fired a shot just wide of the near post.

With half an hour gone, Allarakhia crossed for Shenfield’s Callum Hubble, whose rising shot deflected over before the resulting corner saw Hornchurch youngster George O’Connor’s firm header from Howe’s set-piece blocked on the goal line.

At the other end, a brilliant tackle from Oliver Hanlon denied Cambridgeshire forward Tyler Carter before the home side edged in front on 40 minutes as Allarakhia’s low, 20-yard effort crept in via the inside of the near post.

Essex dominated the second half, but were unable to create an outright opening against a resilient Cambridgeshire side until the final 15 minutes when visiting goalkeeper Oscar Dean did well to hold onto Allarakhia’s low drive.

Hubble then brought another sharp stop from Dean before finding the foot of the near post moments later. And as Essex continued to seek a second, Allarakhia dragged an angled effort inches just the far post.

Then, with just two minutes remaining the win was finally wrapped up as Howe nodded in from close range, completing a fine season-opening win.
