Daggers kept a third away clean sheet of the season in a win at Bromley last Saturday

Dagenham & Redbridge will bid for another strong defensive display away from home when they visit Hartlepool United in the Vanarama National League on Saturday.

Last weekend saw the Essex club perform well at the back in a 2-0 win away to Bromley in the league.

The clean sheet was just a third away shutout for the Essex club this term, with their previous two coming in wins at Barrow and Dover Athletic.

Daggers boss Peter Taylor will hope to see his side add to that with another clean sheet – and a win – at Pools on Saturday.

The shutout at Bromley will have been a huge boost for Daggers defensively, and centre-back Manny Onariase was pleased with how the team coped at the Ravens.

The 22-year-old told the club website after the win at Bromley: “Our defensive work was seamless; if someone didn’t get to a situation, another player was able to.

“It’s something we work so hard on in training, so we’re happy that it’s now showing in games.”

Since joining on loan from Sky Bet Championship club Rotherham United in October, Onariase has gone on to become an imposing figure at the back for Daggers.

The centre-back has formed a strong partnership with Ben Goodliffe, who is on loan from Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers.

And Onariase believes the two on-loan defenders compliment each other well, which the 22-year-old is certain is benefiting Taylor’s men.

“Ben and I work so well together and understand each other. We feed off each other and know what the other one is going to do,” he added.

Whether it is a coincidence or not, Daggers seemed to have turned a corner since Onariase arrived on loan.

A good run of form culminated in the Essex club climbing out of the relegation zone with the win at Bromley, but the defender is not allowing himself to get too carried away.

“Everyone has stepped up their game and is bringing a lot to the team – it’s a team effort,” he said.

“Nothing fazes us and we don’t care about the opposition or the surface; all we care about is going out in every game and putting in a performance.”
