Dagenham & Redbridge captain Craig Robson was pleased his side got off to a good start in their National League campaign.

Daggers picked up a 2-1 victory against Barrow in a dominant performance at Victoria Road on Saturday.

Goals from Corey Whitely and Michael Cheek sealed the three points, but a late goal from visiting left-back Dan Jones put the hosts under severe pressure late on.

And Robson admits they brought the pressure on themselves, saying: “It was a shame to concede late on, it put a bit of pressure on ourselves, but up to 75 minutes I thought we dominated the game and it’s just good to get three points on the board.”

Daggers dominated most of the possession, until the last quarter of an hour when Barrow grabbed momentum.

The visitors eventually clawed one back with Jones slotting home his shot from six yards in the 84th minute to pile pressure on for the dying stages of the match, after creating chance after chance in the 10 minutes beforehand.

Dagenham managed to hold on to bag the opening-day win and get themselves off on the right footing, but Robson believes they can’t be thinking about the league table just yet and must remain focused.

“It’s early days yet, we’ll worry about where we are when it comes to March and April, and then take it from there,” he added. “We just need to take it game by game at the moment.”

The skipper also praised the performance of new signing Michael Cheek for getting off the mark and believes all the summer recruits have been brought in to do a job this season.

“Cheek took his goal very well, he probably shanked it a little bit, but he took it very well,” he added.

“I think a lot of the boys have come in, worked hard and that’s all we can ask for really. We just need to let the talking be done on the pitch.”

Daggers: Cousins, Ling, Lokko, N’Gala, Pennell, Robson, Boucaud, Okenabirhie (Howells 81), Whitely (Robinson 87), Ferrier (Hawkins 63), Cheek. Unused subs: Justham, Wheeler.
