Teenage defender believes Essex club were unfortunate to lose National League opener on Saturday

Dagenham & Redbridge defender Liam Gordon feels the squad were unfortunate to suffer a 1-0 defeat at Boreham Wood on the opening day of the new Vanarama National League season.

Peter Taylor’s first game in charge of the Essex club ended in defeat after Angelo Balanta netted for Wood early in the second half.

Despite the result, the two sides seemed fairly even matched throughout the fixture at Meadow Park.

And Gordon thinks Daggers were unfortunate to lose on the opening day of the season for the first time in three campaigns.

“I thought we did well. We started the game well, but we just weren’t able to get the result we wanted,” said the 19-year-old.

“We weren’t able to score, but I think we worked well together as a unit defensively.

“We gave away a sloppy goal, but they weren’t a threat at all going forward apart from the goal they got.

“For us, we could have penetrated a bit more or taken our chances a bit better in order to get a goal.”

Daggers are back in action on Tuesday night when they welcome Maidstone United for their first league game at Victoria Road this season.

And Gordon hopes the Essex club can earn their first win of the season, which he believes would give the squad a massive lift going forward.

“Getting a win early on is the most important thing for us because of the confidence boost it will give us,” he added.

“We have a young team, so it will be a confidence boost for us if we can get points on the board and will stop us being a team that is overlooked by others in this league.”
