Daggers off to Portman Road for fourth round tie

Dagenham & Redbridge under-18s head for Ipswich Town tonight in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup.

The young Daggers have progressed through five rounds to reach this stage, having entered the tournament in the second qualifying round.

Micah Hyde’s men began with a 6-0 win at home to Coggeshall Town, before triumphing 7-1 at Gorleston in the next stage to reach the first round proper.

Daggers were on the road again, beating Hitchin Town 6-4 in a thriller, before downing Clanfield 85 7-1 at home in the second round.

The Essex club then produced a shock in the third round with a 3-0 success at Oxford United.

Those wins have led Daggers to their trip to Portman road to face the Tractor Boys, and first-team coach Darren Currie says the academy side deserve a lot of credit for their achievements this term.

“The boys have been doing great and they’ve had a good couple of games that have got them to this fixture,” said Currie.

“It will be nice for them to enjoy playing at Portman Road against a Championship club.

“The confidence they’ve got and the way they apply themselves, Micah’s done a brilliant job with all of them.

“That conveyor belt of young boys coming through, there are one or two we have high hopes for.”
