Stopper became a father for second time just hours before winning man of the match award in win over Fylde
Peter Taylor heaped praise on Dagenham & Redbridge Elliot Justham after he produced a top-quality display between the sticks in a 2-1 win at home to Fylde in the Vanarama National League, just hours after becoming a father for the second time.
Goals from Conor Wilkinson and Jack Munns saw Daggers come from behind to triumph, despite the Coasters leading through Andy Bond’s goal after 34 seconds.
The day, though, belonged to Justham, whose wife gave birth at 1pm on Saturday afternoon and Taylor was pleased his keeper was able to make it back in time to play.
“You worry these days that the dads want to be at the birth, so when I knew everything was about to happen, I was thinking we might not have Elliot in goal,” said Taylor.
“He was desperate to play and made that agreement with his good lady. I’m delighted for him because not only was he fantastic against Fylde, but he’s also a dad which is brilliant.”
Daggers had to launch a tremendous recovery to get the better of Fylde after suffering the most disastrous of starts.
And Taylor hailed his team’s character for not crumbling after conceding inside the opening minute.
“It was a very poor start from us. Fylde are a very good team and one of the best in the division.
“When you go a goal down as quickly as that like to play away from home like Fylde, who hadn’t been beaten away from home this season, you know you’re going to have a torrid afternoon.
“The character the players showed to stick at it and keep believing we could get back into the game was terrific.”
