Footballer ‘really happy’ to win prize

England under-17 international Molly Bartrip said she would ‘treasure’ winning the Havering Sports Council’s Competitor of the Year award for 2011.

Frances Bardsley pupil Bartrip beat athletics duo Lauren Deadman and Natalie Gower to claim the silverware and admitted it came as something of a shock.

“I honestly didn’t think that I would win it,” said Bartrip.

“I am going to treasure this moment and hopefully get another one over the next couple of years.

“There were so many other competitors at a high standard who have got a few awards themselves.

“I was looking on the actual trophy and there are some people that I know, so it is good to be able to have my name alongside them. I’m really happy.”

Bartrip has made impressive progress within the England set-up and has set her sights on appearing at a World Cup in future.

She added: “I’ll keep playing my football and keep trying to improve.

“Playing the UEFA qualifiers for England, starting at right-back, and playing all three games it was one of the most amazing experiences, especially singing the national anthem.

“I am only 15 and have 10 caps for the under-17s so hopefully I can keep going.

“There are the next round of the qualifiers in Switzerland so hopefully I will get selected and then it is the World Cup next year so I am hopeful of getting selected for that as well.”
