Former Coopers Coborn pupil and Havering Hockey Club player Alex Defroand was awarded a Cambridge Blue after he represented the prestigious university in their 114th annual Varsity match against Oxford.

The historical fixture took place at Southgate in front of around 400 lively spectators on Sunday and Cambridge took the lead on 14 minutes through a penalty corner strike from their captain and man of the match Will Cairns.

But Oxford equalised just after the break and the tension mounted with the game looking like it would have to be settled on penalty shuffles.

But with five minutes left, Wes Howell got on the end of a slick Cambridge short corner routine to claim a winner and ensure the trophy remained in the hands of Defroand and his fellow light Blues for another year.
