Dagenham & Redbridge winger George Saunders wants to get to the highest level he possibly can and is keen to showcase his ability says manager Daryl McMahon.

The 22-year-old impressed in a free role behind and alongside striker Scott Wilson in Daggers' 1-0 victory over Bromley.

Not only did the youngster impress but the boss was delighted to see his side working hard and pressing their opponents.

McMahon now wants his side to continue that as he believes that can help them massively push on in the National League.

“I think what you saw was a team with real legs and speed in it. You had Scott Wilson, who ran himself into the ground, George Saunders - who I thought was excellent.

“He’s got energy, legs and with the greatest respect to our football club, George wants to play as high as he can and as quick as he can. He’s got a real energy and drive about him.

“Liam Gordon was excellent. It's taken him a little bit of time to find his feet coming back from Bolton, and the week leading up to Wrexham was his best training week and he has carried that on.

“His performance was very good and it's great to see him get a goal.”

McMahon added: “The midfield three are tough tackling, winning second balls, aggressive players. The back three and Elliot Justham were excellent as well.”

He explained the role that Saunders played in the match and how well it suited him.

“He’s a really talented player, I don’t want to stick him in a box somewhere, I would like him to drift and find spaces. Ultimately you want George to go and get in behind the defence.

“When the defence is deep you’ve got to find space in between the lines, in between the defence and midfield to get on the ball, and take people on.

“If the defence come higher, we know he’s got the speed to get in behind, so it’s just about him now really learning the role.

“We don’t want to put too much pressure on him as I think the kid is a fantastic player and I want him to go out and enjoy his football and express himself.”

The win saw Dagenham move up to 16th and they now feel they can push on.

“We’ve spoken about this a lot and I think more often than not as a team if you do the basics or understand the basics - that is working hard and doing your job - then you can get results in this division.

“It’s a very inconsistent division across the whole board and I think if you do the basics well week in and week out then you can climb the table pretty quickly. But likewise if you don’t you can find yourself going the other way.”
