NL Cup: Romford Raiders 9 Invicta Dynamos 3

Romford Raiders booked a place in the final of the National League Cup with victory at Rom Valley Way last night.

Needing to beat Invicta by a three-goal margin to top their group, following a 6-4 defeat in Gillingham earlier in the season, they produced a strong attacking display to set up a showdown with Essex rivals Chelmsford for the silverware.

Raiders must still beat Peterborough on home ice in their final round-robin fixture to confirm their place in the final, but skated to an 11-1 away success over the Islanders only a week earlier.

Juraj Huska opened the scoring in the fifth minute and AJ Smith’s powerplay goal doubled Romford’s lead just before the break, as ex-Raider Tyrone Miller served a tripping penalty.

Huska made it 3-0 just 28 seconds after the restart before helping to set up a powerplay goal for Matt Turner, after Andrius Kaminskas and Nathaniel Rose had dropped the gloves in the 28th minute and received game misconduct penalties.

Play was held up after a plastic toy was thrown at the Invicta bench and the Dynamos opened their account through Justin Noble at the midway mark.

Smith replied 38 seconds later to make it 5-1 and the scoreline remained unchanged until the opening seconds of the final period, when Huska completed his latest hat-trick.

Turner made it 7-1 before Andy Smith hit back for Invicta, but AJ Smith restored the six-goal margin when completing his treble then set up Turner for his third goal of the night on another powerplay.

Andy Smith grabbed a late consolation for the visitors, who host Raiders in a league match tonight (5.15pm).

Romford will be desperate to complete a weekend double over the Dynamos, having seen title rivals Chelmsford slip to a 6-3 defeat on the Isle of Wight last night.

Danny Marshall’s men have played one game more than their Essex neighbours, but a win tonight and at Milton Keynes next Saturday could set up a potential title decider against Chieftains at Rom Valley Way next Sunday (March 17).
