Upminster claimed a tense 10-run win over Woodford Wells, which left their rivals just two points above the relegation zone in Shepherd Neame Essex League Division One.

Put into bat Monkhams Lane, the visitors saw Farid Butt (38), Kiran Jullar (25), Shafiq Rahman (43) and Nabeel Aziz (35) all make starts.

Christopher Hall (5-50) finished as the pick of the Wells attack, from a 16-over spell, as Upminster closed on 214-8 as Rory Ellison and George Ellis also had success with the ball.

But Wells lost Nabel Shaikh cheaply in reply, as he was trapped lbw by John Curtis.

Joe Johnson (63) and Robert Marshall (41) combined for the second wicket, before falling to Ollie Peck and Aziz respectively.

And Rehan Iqbal (22) and Farzand Shah (28) also made starts before they were also dismissed by Aziz, who ran through the middle order to finish with a superb 6-33 haul from his 16 overs.

And Peck (2-51) and Curtis (2-49) claimed further wickets as Wells were dismissed for 204 in the 44th over to leave Upminster in fifth place, while Wells are looking over their shoulders with one match remaining.

Wells visit leaders Buckhurst Hill next weekend, while Upminster host promotion hopefuls Belhus.

An Essex XI visit Upminster on Sunday for their annual benefit match, with the T20 action getting underway at 3pm.
