Essex captain Ryan ten Doeschate admitted the second day of their County Championship clash at Somerset had been a hard one.

The reigning champions were dismissed for 191 in reply to the home side’s first innings 324, with ten Doeschate top scoring with 73.

And although Sam Cook removed Marcus Trescothick early in Somerset’s second innings, Essex find themselves 165 runs behind heading into day three.

Ten Doeschate said: “It was a tough day for us and I think we realise now that we could have bowled better yesterday (Sunday) when Somerset got what was a good score on such a testing pitch.

“We were better with the new ball in the final session today, searching out the edges more and giving little away.

“It is going to be difficult from here with two quality spinners to face in the final innings. But we have shown ourselves capable of fighting back in games before and if we can chase 300 or less it could be interesting.”
