Hornchurch could clinch promotion from Essex League Division Two with just six points at Horndon tomorrow (Saturday), but skipper Roy Smith is keen for his side to go the whole way and seal the title.
Promotion has always been the target for the Harrow Lodge Park team, but if they secure that this weekend against Horndon, there will be no complacency from Smith and his charges in the last two fixtures.
“I’ve calculated it that if the team in third gets a 25-point win, we’ll only need six points on Saturday,” said Smith.
“But we just don’t want to go up, we want to win the league.”
Smith is wary of Horndon, though, having come through a tough battle with them earlier in the season.
“They’ve given us one of our toughest games this season,” he added. “Horndon need one win as well to make sure of their place in the division next season, but we’ll be at full strength again to hopefully get the win.”
Smith’s charges cruised to a 108-run win over West Essex last weekend, with Jamie Sorrell (53), Smith (50 not out) and Chris Haylett (54 not out) helping them declare on 222-3 after 48 overs.
Then it was the Taqi Abbas (4-34) and Chamikara Mudalige (6-53) show as the spinners ripped through the West Essex line-up to skittle them for 114.
“It was very satisfying win,” added Smith.
“We gave ourselves a few more overs with the ball, but Taqi and Chamikara were superb once again.”
