Nick Ison’s latest blog on life at Upminster CC
If any county cricketers were playing at Upminster this weekend they would have spent the late afternoon tweeting about the ‘serious duke’ coming down.
Thankfully our game wasn’t on Sky Sports so the viewers didn’t have to listen to Nick Knight and his views for 45 minutes during a rain interval.
We, like most of Essex, fell foul to the late afternoon monsoon that turned Upminster Park into a Water Park - minus the Germans in Speedos.
It may be good for the farmers and a free car wash service, but it’s a cricketer’s worst nightmare.
At the club, bad weather entails a lot of hanging around the changing room, going through each other’s latest Tinder matches, and bragging about runs and wickets we haven’t yet made or taken.
Fortunately at the club when it rains, it seems to make the club busier as the husbands try and steal some more time away from the wife and claim that it ‘never rained in Leigh-On-Sea’ whilst sinking another Fosters.
So after watching it rain cats and dogs and God knows what other animals on Saturday afternoon, the only thing we could do is get out the fairy liquid and spray it all over the covers for some epic Jurgen Klinsmann style dives.
A special mention must go out to Alex Ward who managed to back slide the whole cover to finish up at mid-off.
