Australian all-rounder impresses in cup tie

New Australian all-rounder Vivian Paver hit a big hundred to help Hutton beat Fives & Heronians in the first round of the Essex League Cup.

Paver smashed 17 sixes and nine fours on his way to 172 from just 103 balls as the hosts piled up 325-9 at the Polo Field Ground.

Alex Tredgett (34), Jon Hammond (25 not out) and Chris Steinberg (24) also made useful starts with the bat, as Pavier dominated stands of 96 and 52 with Steinberg and Jonathan Mowll.

Jake Poulter (3-33) and captain Greg Summers (3-78) had most success with the ball for Fives, as Jonny Kay (2-59) nabbed a brace, and Terry Ballard hit 39 off just 24 balls in reply, including two sixes and six fours, before he was bowled by Mitchell Fenn.

Fellow opener Pete Kilpatrick (33) was caught by Paver off the bowling of Hammond, before Gary Norris and Jake Poulter (39) put on 78 for the third wicket.

And Norris went on to score 56 from 61 balls, hitting eight fours, before he was run out with the Fives total on 198.

William Southgate (2-27) and Hammond (3-53) then shared the next four wickets to fall, before Mathew Scammell (2-21) mopped up the tail to clinch a 79-run win for Hutton and a second-round trip to Belhus next weekend.
