Derby win for firsts, but seconds lose opener
Navestock experienced mixed fortunes as the new Mid-Essex League season got underway.
The first team were put into bat by Hornchurch Athletic seconds in Division Five and made a solid enough start.
But Chris Baker (2-28) and Lak Gill (2-32) reduced them to 66-5, before Liam Faulkner (25), Billy Greaves, Matt Richards (20) and Tom Greaves (26 not out) produced some clean hitting and good running to lift the total to 170.
Billy Lozowski made an early breakthrough in reply, before Nathaniel Bastin and Gill (54) looked to put Athletic on top.
Then Manish Patel produced a stunning spell and hit the stumps five times in a 7-23 haul, bowling in tandem with Matt Simmons, to put the pressure on as Athletic were dismissed for 99.
The seconds were soon in trouble against South Woodham Ferrers at 4-2, but stalwarts Mark Gildersleeve (55) and Ian Scott (41) put on 64 and Will Archer helped lift the total to 162 from 40 overs.
Vic Simmons (3-42) was the only Navestock bowler to make an impact in reply, though, as the visitors eased to a six-wicket victory.
“Despite the defeat, having been promoted two divisions in the winter, this was a good performance and will be an excellent gauge to the standard of the season ahead,” said Simmons.
