La Cucaracha, la cucaracha – blow-up cactus at the door – la cucaracha, la cucaracha – Craney spewing on the floor!

Yes, it was time for Athletic’s much-anticipated Mexican night which gave club members a unique chance to converse about the day’s play while wearing a novelty poncho – exciting indeed!

As you might expect, the old pavilion was awash with tequila, banners and piñatas but most interesting of all were the much promoted Mexican burgers for sale.

Naturally, there are very few people who would be unable to pen a considerable list of dishes República Mexicana is said to have gifted the world – fajitas, nachos, chilli con carne – but I think I might be forgiven for asking Garthy exactly what constituted a ‘Mexican burger’.

With a slight roll of the eyes, he informed me ‘the bloke cooking them wears a sombrero!’ Of course…

The games preceding the evening’s frolics ended in tense wins for the firsts and fours, with the likely winner alternating regularly throughout both matches.

In the home fixtures, the second and third teams had their bowling attacks blunted by spirited challengers, with defeat seeming the likely outcome shortly after tea.

As the league season nears midway, it is apparent that divisions six and nine have become greatly more competitive compared to 2014.

Finally, I have a fractured thumb. Sustained while training, witness accounts of the incident tend to vary.

Some claim that the vicious delivery spat off a length, giving the batsman little chance to adjust before crunching into a brave hand raised to protect the face (actually that’s only me).

Others judged it to be a mild waist-high ball played uselessly by a man with only one shot.

Aside, this means I shall be coming to you in a pure journalistic capacity for the coming editions.

Vamos Athletico!
