Wickford tailenders deny victory bid

Hutton had to settle for a draw from their opening match of the Essex League Division Two season with Wickford at the Patmore Memorial Ground.

Put into bat by the home side, Hutton lost openers Cameron and Alex Tredgett inside the first 10 overs, with Australian batsman Vivian Paver falling for just four to leave them 41-3.

James Mowll (29) and Dan Hagger put on 72 for the fourth wicket, with Hagger hitting two sixes and seven fours in his 71 off 87 balls.

Usman Jan (38) and Jonathan Mowll (35) added another 55 for the sixth wicket, scoring at a run a ball, to help Hutton reach 221 and Jon Hammond struck early in Wickford’s reply.

Hammond and Patterson had further success to leave the hosts 64-4, but a 57-run stand for the fifth wicket held up Hutton’s push for victory.

Jan (3-31) and Paver combined as four more wickets fell for just nine runs to leave Wickford 130-8 and the visitors hoping to go on and finish the job.

But tailenders Chirag Desai and Anthony McKenna shared an unbroken 66 for the ninth wicket to frustrate Hutton and see Wickford safely to the close at 196-8.
