Hutton had little to cheer from a trip to Colchester’s picturesque Castle Park in their latest Shepherd Neame Essex League Division One fixture.

Captain Dan Hagger chose to bat first after winning the toss but Adam Holdgate and Julian Whetstone fell cheaply.

And Cameron Tredgett (25), Joseph Parry and Vivian Paver followed in quick succession to leave the visitors in trouble at 51-5, before Hagger and Chris Steinberg (23) put on 54 for the sixth wicket.

Hagger top scored with 32, but Hutton needed double-figure scores from tailenders Connor Limrick (21 not out) and Ed Abel Smith to get up to 157.

And it was never enough to trouble the home side, who saw their openers put on 53 and went on to claim a six-wicket win despite a decent spell from Smith (3-43).

Hutton had a faint glimmer of hope as Colchester lost their fourth wicket with the total on 108, but an unbroken 51-run stand between Josh Rymell (46 not out) and Ollie Lovejoy saw the hosts ease to their target.
