Roy Smith has heaped praise on everyone associated with Hornchurch after a historic season for the Harrow Lodge Park club.

Billy Gordon’s men secured a clean sweep with the Essex League T20 Cup, Essex League Cup and Premier Division title all secured in recent months.

After beginning the 2014 season in Division Two, it has been some rise for the club and topped off with this remarkable campaign.

Smith said: “This year has gone much better than everyone predicted, but it shows what you can achieve with hard work and we have had a lot of that over the last few years.

“Billy took over the captaincy and brought a different approach and gave some freshness to everyone and it worked perfectly.

“It is a great achievement and I am so pleased for the chairman (Jeremy West), everyone else at the club and all the fans.”

At the end of the 2013 term, Hornchurch finished seventh in Division Two and the following winter Smith took over the captaincy and led the club to promotion in his first season in charge.

Since then it has been positive after positive and although he stepped down from the role at the end of the 2017, Gordon’s relished the opportunity to skipper the side.

Former captain Smith admitted while he has had some injury worries this term, he is eager to continue contributing and wants to help Hornchurch try and retain their crown.

He added: “I want to keep playing next year. I have enjoyed this season with a little bit less pressure.

“Fitness wise, I have had a few little niggles and I have batted down the order which is not always easy when you see the other guys come in and get runs, but I am cool with that and just happy to help out where needed.

“It has been nice to bat with some of the youngsters and try to offer my advice to them and I am still fit and able and have plenty of enthusiasm left in me, so while I have that I will look to keep going.”
