Captain Clarke expects tough trip
It has been a great start to Essex League Premier Divison life for Harold Wood this season, but captain Tom Clarke knows they are in for a tough test at reigning champions Wanstead tomorrow (Saturday).
Clarke was relieved to see his side crawl over the line in a two-wicket win over Loughton last weekend as they made it three victories on the spin to put them in third place after four games.
But he doesn’t want his side to get too carried away and said: “It’s been a really good start. The limited-over games are something we know really well and we knew if we got off to a good start in that form it would give us that platform.
“There is still a lot of cricket to be played though and Saturday will be a big test as we know how good they can be.”
Wood skittled Loughton for 111, with some fine bowling first up from new-ball duo Shabhaz Khan (5-13) and Hamza Ikram (1-16), before Umar Farooq (4-17) mopped up the tail.
However, they made hard work of it in reply as they lost three wickets for just one run at 110-5, and only just got over the line thanks to a wide.
“They had a good little partnership to post a score that is sometimes difficult to chase and we knew the pitch wasn’t as good as it can be with the amount of rain we have had recently,” added Clarke.
“We collapsed towards the end and from 110-5 we lost three wickets for one run. It was one of those things, but it’s good to win ugly at times.”
