Miserable weekend for local cricket as only one club wins

Ardleigh Green were the only winners in a miserable weekend of cricket for our local clubs.

The Premier Division side opened their league campaign with a five-wicket victory over Loughton.

Roy Smith starred with the bat for the home side, hitting an unbeaten 62 from just 43 balls, while Shaun Eaton shone with the ball, finishing with figures of 4-38.

That was as good as it got for our local clubs as Harold Wood lost to Buckhurst Hill by 55 runs in Division One.

Elsewhere in the same league, Hornchurch lost at Orsett by 60 runs as the visitors were bowled out for 220 after the home side were dismissed for 260.

Gidea Park & Romford also tasted defeat in their opening league game at home to Hadleigh and Thundersley.

Meanwhile, Upminster began life in Division One with a slender home defeat at the hands of Chingford.

The hosts lost by just 12 runs despite opener Steve Wright’s knock of 73.
