Belhus claim comfortable Division One win at Gallows Corner

Gidea Park & Romford were well beaten by Belhus in their first match of the new Essex League Division One season at Gallows Corner.

Park had finished runners-up to Division Two champions Belhus last year and were second-best once again after being dismissed for just 181.

Put into bat after losing the toss, Park saw Kasi Hoq and Adam McKie make a steady enough start with a 41-run stand, which proved the best of the innings.

Matt Doran made the breakthrough and went on to finish with 5-45, as wickets fell at regular intervals throughout the Park innings.

Menesh Gunalan (28) top scored for the home side, as George Rogers and James Pegram both made 26, and Gunalan struck early with the ball in reply to give Park a boost.

It proved a false dawn, though, as Joe Joyce and Roy Heffernan put on 143 for the second Belhus wicket to leave them needing just 36 more.

Joyce fell five runs short of a century, having hit a six and 15 fours in his 83-ball innings, but Belhus secured a six-wicket win in the 37th over of their reply, despite a late brace from Charlie Gordon (2-16).
