Young bowler impresses in Essex League Cup win

Shenfield raced into the next round of the Essex League Cup with an emphatic eight-wicket win over Horndon.

Having beaten Oakfield Parkonians by five wickets a week earlier, Jack Kliber’s Premier Division side made short work of another Division Two opponent, as Jack Plom shone with the ball.

The hosts chose to bat first after winning the toss, but Plom struck two early blows to leave them 17-2.

And after new-ball partner Matthew Salisbury had success at the other end, Plom claimed his third scalp to make it 33-4.

Salisbury claimed the fifth Horndon wicket to fall with the score on 37, but the home side’s sixth-wicket pair then steadied the ship and doubled the tally.

Plom broke through with two more wickets in quick succession to finish with 5-41, before Arshad Ali and Salisbury (3-37) enjoyed further success to reduce Horndon to 80-9.

The last-wicket pairing added 36 to frustrate Shenfield’s attack, before Harsh Kumar wrapped up the innings in the 21st over.

And Shenfield lost Ali cheaply in reply, before Ollie Ekers shared stands with Jamie Walton, Tom Ballington and Tom Austin (23 not out) to seal victory inside 21 overs.

Ekers hit 12 boundaries to finish unbeaten on 58, from 58 balls, as Shenfield gave themselves a boost ahead of their home league opener against local rivals Hornchurch next weekend.
