21-year-old’s form this season has impressed the England selectors
Essex bowler Reece Topley has been called up by England for the first time after the ECB selectors announced a 13-man squad to face New Zealand in the NatWest International T20 on Tuesday 23 June at Emirates Old Trafford.
Eoin Morgan, fresh from scoring 113 against the Kiwi’s yesterday, will captain a squad that includes five players yet to play an international T20.
Sam Billings, James Vince, David Willey, Mark Wood and Topley have all been including and only the Essex bowler and Hampshire’s Vince are not involved in the current ODI series against New Zealand.
National selector, James Whitaker, explained that England wanted to have a look players who are new to international cricket in this one-off clash against the Kiwi’s.
Whitaker said: “This match against New Zealand allows us another opportunity to look at players relatively new to international cricket as we look to build a squad for the World T20 in India this winter.
“The squad is made up of players who have demonstrated their ability in domestic cricket and fully deserve a chance to continue their progress against a very good New Zealand side.
“We have already seen our limited overs cricket begin to move in the right direction which is exciting but we are all aware that we have plenty more to do if we are going to challenge the very best sides in the world on a regular basis.”
21-year-old Topley has been impressive for Essex this season and he’ll hope to earn his England debut next Tuesday at the Emirates Old Trafford.
