Former Essex staffer Kishen Velani hit a century to lead the hosts to a challenging 298-7 declared, before the wickets were shared as Billericay were dismissed for 150.

Herons captain Joe Ellis-Grewal chose to bat after winning the toss and saw Arfan Akram (36) put on 83 with Hassan Chowdhury, who hit a six and eight fours in his 61.

Aron Nijjar (12) was the junior partner in a 63-run stand with Velani, who had further support from Jonathan Das (21) on the way to his 106 off 97 balls.

Velani hit a six and 13 fours before he was sixth man out with the score on 259, with Ellis-Grewal, Zain Shahzad (20 not out) and Ismail Dar lifting the total close to 300.

Ross Poulton (3-59) and Darren Ironside (2-111) combined to bowl 39 of the 60 overs, but Billericay lost Paul Martin with just three runs on the board in reply as Jack Lord struck.

Shahzad (2-13) and Lord (3-39) reduced the visitors to 52-5, with Aaron Curtis (30) the only Billericay batsman to make an impact.

And left-arm spinners Ellis-Grewal (3-40) and Nijjar (2-35) then combined to removed the rest of the batsmen as Andy Smith was left stranded on 55, having hit eight boundaries in a defiant 54-ball knock.
