Upminster look up against it in their battle to avoid the drop from the Essex League Premier Division following defeat against Colchester.

Put into bat by their fellow strugglers, the home side lost Shafiq Rahman and Louis Pickering cheaply.

Kiran Kullar and Alan Ison were dismissed by successive balls from Ollie Bocking and Ben Stephens claimed his third wicket to make it 34-5.

Shahbaz Butt and Farid Butt (20) stopped the rot, as Alex Kirkpatrick and captain Matthew Tigg dug in with double-figure scores.

Butt fell for 68, having hit two sixes and eight fours, and Connor Whetstone struck a six and three fours in a late came of 18 off 17 balls as Upminster were dismissed for 163 in 53 overs.

Whetstone and Tigg (2-39) had some success with the ball in reply, but Julian Russell struck an unbeaten 93 off 113 balls to steer the visitors to a seven-wicket win in 44 overs.

Defeats leaves Upminster 27 points adrift of safety with three games remaining.
