Shenfield had to settle for a draw with Premier Division strugglers Colchester, 11 runs short of their target with their last-wicket pair at the crease.

Oliver Castell (3-21) made inroads with the new ball after the visitors were put into bat, with Richard Abson-Bennett helping reduce them to 55-4.

Colchester’s middle order rallied in support of opener Joe MacGregor, who fell for 71 to Tom Ausin (2-46).

But Abson-Bennett (2-47) and Arshad Ali (2-64) also finished with braces for Shenfield as Colchester were dismissed for 186 in the 55th over.

Shenfield lost Ryan Plom and Ollie Ekers cheaply in reply, before Jack Potticary (27) and captain Jack Kliber (32) took them to 53-2.

Tom Ballington (42) and Jack Plom moved the score to 110-4, but three wickets then fell for just four runs to put Shenfield on the back foot.

Austin (20) added 39 with Plom (32), who was ninth man out with the score on 164, before Castell survived for seven balls.
