Brentwood took over at the top of the Essex League Premier Division table despite being held to a draw by Chelmsford.

With leaders Wanstead taking just two points from their five-wicket derby defeat at Ilford, Brentwood’s haul of 13 bonus points gives them a slender advantage in the title race with three games left.

Put into bat they lost Tom Oakley for a duck, but stand-in captain Aaron West (40) had key contributions from Jon Walford (68 not out) and Anthony Alleyne (51) as his side reached 256-8.

Max Osborne (24), Rishi Patel (23) and Will Buttleman (21) also made starts for the home side, who saw Anthony Giles and Patel make early inroads with the ball in Chelmsford’s reply.

Ian Belchamber (2-44) and Charlie Griffiths also got in on the act to leave the visitors 103-5, but that was as good as it got for Brentwood as the sixth-wicket pair put on an unbroken 105 to earn a draw.

News of Wanstead’s derby loss and surrender of top spot provided some cheer.
