Brentwood picked up 14 points from a rain-affected draw at Southend on the first day of the Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division season.

Put into bat, the visitors saw captain Aaron West (81) and Guy Balmford combine in a notable first-wicket stand, with Essex youngster Rishi Patel (20) also making a start.

Balmford was unbeaten on 104 after an unbroken stand with Tom Oakley (63) as Brentwood declared on 283-2 after 44 overs.

That left Southend to face 53 overs in reply, but more rain before tea saw that number reduced.

Charlie Griffiths (3-59) had the most success with the ball for Brentwood, as slow left-armer Ian Belchamber (2-39), Ryan Tobin and Ash Casey also got in on the act to reduce the home side to 151-7.

But Joe Robbins held firm to score an unbeaten 55 as another five overs were lost to the weather late on, as Southend took four points.

Brentwood will hope for better when they entertain Chelmsford next weekend.
