Ardleigh Green had to settle for a draw at Benfleet in their latest Essex League Division Three outing.

Put into bat by the home side, they lost openers Tom Gentle and Paul Hurworth cheaply to the new ball.

But captain Chris Cook held firm, as more wickets fell at the other end, and had support from Lloyd Edwards (37) and James Lavender (27).

Cook finished unbeaten on 73 as Green closed on 187-9 and saw Edwards made early inroads with the ball in Benfleet’s reply.

Rob Zamitt and Ben Munday hit back for the home side with half-centuries, but both fell to Edwards as he went on to record figures of 16-5-53-6.

Jamal Chaudhry and Cook also had success with the ball as Green scented the chance of victory, but the home side’s last-wicket pairing held on to earn the draw a 174-9.

Green return to Central Park next weekend to host bottom club Epping and will be keen for revenge after losing their previous clash in late June by three wickets.
