Hornchurch beaten by three wickets at Harrow Lodge Park

Hornchurch skipper Roy Smith was distraught after his team’s three-wicket defeat at home to Brentwood in the Essex Premier Division.

Batting first, the Harrow Lodge Park club closed on 196-9, with Brian Barnard (45) and Billy Gordon (37) contributing to the total.

Hornchurch looked to have Brentwood in trouble in reply, with the visitors 148-7 and Marc Whitlock having claimed two of those wickets.

However, no further batsmen were dismissed as the visitors made it home with seven balls to spare.

The defeat brought an end to a three-game winning run for Hornchurch in the division.

And Smith was devastated as he felt Hornchurch had let a good position slip to end up on the losing side.

“We’re very disappointed with the result because we felt the game was there for the taking,” admitted Smith.

“We threw it away as we dropped three catches and as the saying goes, catches win matches.”
