Brentwood slipped to a three-wicket defeat at defending Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division champions Chelmsford at Chelmer Park.

Guy Balmford (24) put on 38 with captain Aaron West, but Will Buttleman and Rishi Patel fell cheaply to leave the visitors 46-3.

Tom Oakley put on 66 with West, who eventually fell for 36 off 84 balls, but then departed soon after for 32 to leave Brentwood 116-5.

Joe Buttleman (25) was the only other batsman to make much impact, lasting 61 balls, although James Redwood, Harry Hobson and Charlie Griffiths all got into double figures as they closed on 185-9.

Griffiths struck early with the ball in the home side’s reply, with Oakley (3-23) then reducing them to 53-4.

West produced a run out to get rid of Ben Clifford with the total on 74, but Chelmsford then saw Oliver Devenish and Bradley Green put on 96 for the sixth wicket, which proved a matchwinning stand.

Ash Casey (2-33) ended both innings to give Brentwood a glimmer of hope, but Chelmsford got home with seven balls to spare.
