Six-wicket defeat for Smith’s men
Hornchurch were sent to a six-wicket defeat by Essex League Premier Division rivals Chelmsford at Chelmer Park.
Captain Roy Smith chose to bat after winning the toss and saw Taqi Abbas and Ronnie Saunders make starts, before both fell in quick succession to leave them 41-2.
Billy Gordon (23) also got going, before becoming the first of six victims for James Clifford, and Brian Barnard (30) and Zeeshan Khan departed to leave the visitors 114-5.
Smith hit two sixes and a four in his 29, while Chris Sains put on 54 for the seventh wicket with Chamikara Mudalige, hitting two sixes and four fours in his 40 from 44 balls.
Marc Whitlock fell first ball, but Joe Defreitas and Mehad Khan helped Mudalige (37 not out) lift the total to 211, before Clifford (6-69) wrapped up the innings.
Mehad Khan (2-43) made early inroads in Chelmsford’s reply, but Dan Hagen (50) and Ben Clifford (83 not out) hit half-centuries in a 93-run stand for the third wicket.
And bowling hero James Clifford weighed in with an unbeaten 36 from just 32 balls as Chelmsford reached their target in the 50th over.
