Brentwood were comfortable winners over Southend in the Essex League Premier Division at the Old County Ground.

Visiting captain Matthew Wagstaff chose to bat after winning the toss but former Essex staffer Thomas Moore dismissed Joe Sibbons for a fourth-ball duck to make an early breakthrough.

Joe Robbins (59) and Tom Phillippe (79) shared a notable second-wicket stand, but Moore (2-42) struck again, with Max Osborne (2-28), Ian Belchamber (2-43) and Anthony Alleyne (2-38) also nabbing braces to dismiss the visitors for 223.

Brentwood raced to their target in 38 overs thanks to half-centuries from openers Aaron West (59 off 45 balls) and Guy Balmford (86 off 92), with Alleyne unbeaten on 63 as the hosts secured an eight-wicket triumph.

Victory leaves Brentwood in second place at the midway point of the season, 10 points adrift of leaders and defending champions Wanstead, with a home match against struggling Colchester up next weekend.
