Orsett denied in opening fiuxture of 2017 season
Billericay had to settle for a draw with Orsett from their first match of the new Essex League Division One season.
Captain Lee Knight put the visitors into bat at the Toby Howe Ground, but the move backfired as Umaad Sultan and Umar Ayub both hit half-centuries in a 121-run opening stand.
David Houghton removed both in quick succession, with Ross Poulton trapping visiting skipper Paul Bennett lbw soon after to make it 149-3.
But Orsett kept the scoreboard ticking over and, although Houghton (3-61) claimed another scalp, the visitors closed on 262-5.
Billericay lost David Hinnigan cheaply in reply, with opening partner Nick Van Lint following soon after to leave them 18-2.
Houghton hit four fours in his 22, before falling with the score on 36 to leave the home side up against it.
Knight put on 48 for the fourth wicket with Poulton, but when Mark Harmer fell to a fourth-ball duck Billericay were in trouble at 85-5.
Poulton and Andy Smith dug in, though, to share an unbroken 92-run stand for the sixth wicket, with both hitting half-centuries to secure the draw.
Smith struck 11 fours in his 56 off just 63 balls, while Poulton added a six and eight fours as he finished unbeaten on 57, from 92 deliveries in Billericay’s 177-5.
