First round throws up shocks and excitemenr
Young bowler Dan Hughes made the switch from Wanstead Central to Romford for the start of the summer season and he is already showing that it was a great move, writes Dave Evans..
On Monday he took on England international and former National singles champion Steve Mitchinson in the opening round of this year’s county singles and it proved to be the scalp of his young life.
Hughes made a great start as rusty Mitchinson failed to find the right lines and it was 10-0 before anyone could blink.
The England man is never out of it, though, and pulled back to 16-13, but Hughes held his nerve to take the match 21-13 and book a second-round clash with another Romford bowler in Craig Burgess, who had a walkover against Stuart McKenzie of St Chads.
Hughes is already in the Area Final of the county fours which will be played tonight (Friday).
He teamed up with Trevor Sayer, John Tully and skip Mark Nullmeyers to win their Area semi-final 21-13 against a King’s Chase team.
They will now face another King’s Chase team skipped by Jamie Holmes for a place in the quarter-finals.
Former Elm Park bowler Nullmeyers is another who has made the switch to Romford this summer from Wanstead Central.
And he is going great guns in the county singles after beating Rob Fleming 21-5 over at King’s Chase.
He also has the benefit of a bye in round two, propelling him into the area semi-final already where he could face another former National champion in Richard Bolton in that round.
Bolton marched past Ray Bell of Rainham by 21-4 in round one and now meets another Romford man in Chris Morton who had a real battle with Howard Styles of King’s Chase.
Their match was never going in one direction and Morton eventually squeezed home by a slender 21-20 margin.
Also through in Area 8 is Keith Newberry of Brentwood who beat Romford’s Tully 21-11 and he will take on Jamie Lambert of Harold Hill, who had a bye.
Another Harold Hill man, David Brewington, beat Romford’s Chris Martin by a whopping 21-5, but he will have his work cut out in round two when he entertains Nigel Smith, who battled his way to a 21-17 win over Brentwood’s Fred Wasmuth.
In Area 9, Mark Hodges of King’s Chase will take his place in round two after a battling 21-18 win over James White of Harold Hill, and he will now face Arthur Blackmore of Rainham, who beat Romford’s Keith Tyler 21-12.
Con Fleming made it another King’s Chase bowler into round two after he beat Paul Topley of Brentwood 21-14 and he will take on Haynes Park bowler Eddie Fancourt, who got the better of A Smith by 21-13.
Romford’s Steve Pickford had a walkover and he will now take on Geoff Byatt of Brentwood, who had an excellent tussle with J Hicks of Gidea Park 21-17.
The next round will be played on Monday.
