Chieftains scalp Raiders again

National League: Chelmsford 8 London Raiders 3
Raiders found defending National League champions Chelmsford too strong once again at the Riverside Ice Arena last night.
But having already lost 8-1 in an earlier cup meeting, this latest reverse showed some improvement at least in the second of eight encounters between the sides this season.
Having been held to a 1-1 draw by Solent at Lee Valley the night before, Raiders raced into a 2-0 lead against the Chieftains as Sam Roberts and Bailey Chittock struck in quick succession.
But former Raiders captain Anthony Leone hit back for the hosts and another ex-Raider Matt Turner levelled, before Ross Brears completed the turnaround and put Chieftains 3-2 up at the end of the opening session.
The visitors ran into penalty trouble in the middle stanza and Chelmsford took full advantage to add three powerplay goals to their tally to pull clear.
Turner’s second strike of the night made it 4-2, before Danny Hammond converted during a 5-on-3 opportunity to claim Chelmsford’s fifth goal.
And Brears then bagged his second of the night as Chieftains enjoyed another man advantage to leave Raiders with a mountain to climb in the final stanza.
Young forward Seb Downing netted his seventh goal of the season for Raiders just 20 seconds after the restart, against his former club, but any hopes of an unlikely comeback were soon ended as import defenceman Lukas Zatopek restored Chelmsford’s four-goal cushion a few minutes later.
Chieftains had the final say too as Jake Sylvester completed the night’s scoring with the home side’s eighth goal, on another powerplay, with 92 seconds left on the clock.
