Trainer Liz McNair will be hoping King Kane can repeat the kennel’s victory with Express Trend two years ago by landing the Partex Marking Prestige final at Hall Green on Wednesday.
The return of the 645m event after a two-year break was welcomed by the Scottish husband-and-wife team, now based in Ashford, Kent, who saw King Kane chase home event favourite Blonde Razor (40.06sec) in this week’s heats.
Their runner, a son of an Oaks winner in Shaws Dilemma, is the youngest in the line-up for the £5,000-to-the-winner competition, which is being backed by local greyhound owner Peter Symonds’ company.
Champion trainer Mark Wallis, fresh from winning the year’s first major event with Reel Trickyone in a stunning Coral Coronation Cup final at Romford a fortnight ago, in which the Imperial Kennels set-up sent out the first four home, again has the favourite for the title with Blonde Razor.
However, he will need to beat fastest heat winner Senior Cup, trained by Belle Vue, Manchester trainer Andy Heyes, who stopped the clock in 40.05sec and will now bid to land his second Hall Green title in the space of a few weeks after victory in the Midland St Leger.
Midway Nick, a son of double TV Trophy champion Midway Skipper, won the other heat in 40.24sec, and will represent Coventry trainer Simon Cull.
The field for the Partex Marking final, which will be supported by a host of open races on the night to delight racegoers given free entry on the night (see www.www.lovethedogs.co.uk/hallgreen), is completed by Ricky Holloway’s Airforce General and Stuart Buckland’s local hope Scala Dromin.
Latest betting: 7-4 Blonde Razor, 3-1 Senior Cup, King Kane, 4-1 Midway Nick, 8-1 Scala Dromin, 33-1 Airforce General.
